a base for Semenggoh, Bako and coastal forest reserves

Kuching acts as a gateway to a number of protected areas and community managed forest reserves.

The city itself has a clean layout with a riverside walkway and older commercial streets that retain a sense of local life. Colonial era buildings, museums and small food markets sit alongside newer structures, making it straightforward to see the main points of interest in one or two days.

Semenggoh Wildlife Centre lies south of the city and is well known for its resident orangutans. Entry is controlled and feeding sessions take place in the morning and afternoon. Sightings are not guaranteed but conditions are consistent and the forest here supports a relatively stable population.

Bako National Park sits to the north east of Kuching and is reached by a short road journey followed by a local boat transfer to a coastal landing point. The park contains quiet beaches, forest trails, mangrove areas and common sightings of proboscis monkeys, long tailed macaques and bearded pigs. Boardwalks and marked paths allow access without long expeditions.

Gunung Gading National Park is further west and provides access to forest trails where the Rafflesia plant occasionally flowers. Timing is difficult to predict but the park delivers a simple day walk in mixed forest with river pools and clear tracks.
