access to Borneo’s mountains, islands, and rural highlands

Kota Kinabalu lies on the northwest coast of Borneo, facing a chain of small offshore islands that form part of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.

The city is built along the waterfront, with modern hotels, a busy port, and a small historic centre clustered around Gaya Street. It has grown rapidly in recent decades but remains straightforward to navigate, with reliable transport links and a relaxed coastal atmosphere.

The surrounding area is varied and easily explored. Offshore islands such as Manukan and Gaya offer beaches and coral reefs within 20 minutes by boat, while Mount Kinabalu National Park lies two hours inland and provides access to montane forest, orchids, and endemic bird species.

To the south, the Crocker Range and Tambunan highlands retain areas of primary forest and rural villages that contrast with the coast.

Kota Kinabalu International Airport handles regular flights from Kuala Lumpur and direct regional services from Singapore, Hong Kong, and several other Asian hubs. Within Sabah, it acts as the primary connection point for flights to Sandakan, Lahad Datu, and Tawau, linking easily with Sepilok, the Kinabatangan River, Tabin, and Danum Valley.

The city itself offers a wide range of accommodation, from beach resorts to small guesthouses, as well as seafood markets and restaurants popular with both residents and visitors.

The climate is tropical and stable year round with heavy but short-lived rain showers common in the late afternoon. June to September tends to be slightly drier, while December to February is the main wet season.

Sea conditions around Kota Kinabalu are calmest and clearest from February to April, making this the most reliable period for boat trips and island visits. From May onward rainfall increases and visibility in the water becomes more variable, with occasional choppy periods in July and August. The wettest conditions usually occur from October to December, when showers are frequent and sea state can change quickly, although water based activities still operate.
