limestone outcrops and quiet coves

Langkawi covers about 480 square kilometres, with a landscape of limestone hills, mangroves, and rainforest rising above long stretches of beach.

Much of the island remains forested, and the interior supports hornbills, macaques, and flying lemurs. Coastal areas mix white sand beaches with rocky coves and offshore islets, many accessible by short boat rides.

The northwest and southwest coasts hold the best beaches and a concentration of resorts, while the central interior is protected as the Gunung Raya Forest Reserve.

The Langkawi Sky Bridge and cable car rise above the rainforest canopy for wide views across the islands and sea. Mangrove motorboat safari through the Kilim Geoforest Park passes karst cliffs, caves, and nesting sea eagles. Inland trails lead to small waterfalls and observation points, while offshore islands such as Pulau Dayang Bunting offer swimming and short forest walks.

Langkawi has a warm and humid climate year round, with the driest months being December to March, when skies are clear and sea conditions calm. April to October brings more rain but also fewer visitors.

Accommodation ranges from small beach lodges and resorts to larger international hotels, many positioned along Pantai Cenang or Datai Bay.

Langkawi is linked by air to Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Singapore, and by seasonal flights from other Southeast Asian hubs. Regular ferries operate to the mainland at Kuala Perlis and to Satun in southern Thailand. Most travellers visit for two to four nights, combining rainforest exploration with time on the coast.
