comfortable forest chalets amid mangroves and flooded woodland

Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort is located in the lower reaches of the Kinabatangan River in eastern Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.

The lodge sits within a quiet pocket of riverine and swamp forest near Abai village, accessible only by boat from Sandakan. Raised boardwalks link a collection of chalets to the main area, which includes an open-sided dining deck, small lounge and bar, and a network of shaded walkways overlooking the forest and internal lagoon.

One aspect we particularly like is the atmosphere of seclusion and the constant presence of wildlife around camp. Proboscis monkeys and macaques are often seen in the trees beside the boardwalks, while hornbills and kingfishers move through the canopy overhead and occasionally elephants move through the forest nearby.

Rooms

Guest accommodation is in twenty spacious chalets, built on stilts and set along raised boardwalks among the forest. Each room has a private verandah with seating, a comfortable double or twin bed fitted with a mosquito net, and an en-suite bathroom with hot shower and flush toilet. Rooms are air-conditioned and include ceiling fans.

A small number of chalets overlook the lagoon area, while others face directly into the surrounding rainforest.
