four routes to your perfect safari

On this page, we offer you four main ways to identify your perfect safari.

Country

If you are confident that you know which country or countries you want to include in your trip, then this is a logical place to start. Refer to the first item in the Frequently Asked Questions below or the Where to Go link at the top of the page.

Location

If you have heard of certain key locations that you would like to visit (Serengeti, Kruger, Okavango Delta etc.) or if you would like to browse the best safari locations, then this is a good route. Refer to the second item in the Frequently Asked Questions below or the Where to Go link at the top of the page.

Time of year

If you already know when you want to travel, then head to this page to discover the best safari locations for each month. Refer to the third item in the Frequently Asked Questions below or the When to Travel link at the top of the page.

Safari type

If you don’t know about the geography, but would like to take a look at trip styles (family safari, honeymoon safari) or experiences (elephant safari, conservation safari, walking safari), this is a really nice way to browse for ideas. Refer to the What to Do link at the top of the page.

Frequently asked questions

Africa contains around a dozen countries which offer serious savanna safari, with each one offering a unique range of landscapes, wildlife, lodges and experiences.

There is also a range of further countries which offer complementary elements such as tropical beaches, archaeology and culture.

On the linked page, we run through all of the countries that we offer in Africa. The chances are extremely high that the right safari country for you is one of the first seven listed.

seven prime countries for safari

Africa contains over a hundred locations which offer serious savanna safari, with each one offering a unique range of landscapes, wildlife, lodges and experiences.

On the linked page we list nineteen areas, starting with the three most popular. If this is your first safari, then there’s an eight percent chance you will include one of these in your trip.

After that, we highlight various lesser-visited but equally high quality reserves, all of which are great, most of which are easily included in trips, but some of which are extremely remote and expensive to access.

It is impossible to overstate how important seasonality is to a savanna safari trip.

The month that you choose to travel will greatly affect where you go, what you will see, how much traffic you will encounter and how much you will spend.

In the linked article, we divide the year into five periods. The first two, the Jun-Oct dry season and the Nov-Dec early green season, cover probably 95% of all trips.

The other three periods cover the more complicated Jan-May period, when conditions change fast, but which contains some real hidden gems.

Please feel free to read as much or as little of this as you wish. Ultimately, we will always take full responsibility for your trip being perfectly constructed around the seasonality.

dividing the savanna safari year into five key seasons

There are so many different types of safari.

Classic savanna safaris classically involve driving around the bush looking at lions and elephants.

Trips to these areas can be tuned to focus on specific activities, like walking safari, motorboat safari and canoe safari. Or trips can also be tuned to focus on specific animals, like wild-dogs and elephants.

But safaris need not be limited to the savanna plains, they can explore tropical forests, mountain ranges and deserts.
They need not be limited to Africa. We operate safaris to South America, Asia and even Antarctica.

And safaris need not be limited to focusing on land mammals. They can concentrate on marine life, or cultural explorations, or even historical explorations.

If you can find one of the options below that appeals to you, then click on the link and you will be taking a really big step to finding your ideal safari.

Tailor-made safari trips can range literally from USD 2500 to USD 50,000 per person.

The median cost across all trips is around USD 10,000 per person, excluding the international flights. However, this number is artificially elevated by a relatively few very expensive trips. The mode value is closer to USD 8000 per person.

We love building trips at all levels.

At the lower end, we love working with guests who need to be more careful with their money. We very much know how that feels. We enjoy the challenge of finding truly authentic safari options. We also love the lodge operators at this level, who tend to be independents who do it for the love.

At the higher end, it is such a privilege to be able to work with guests who are willing and able to spend big to create truly epic trips. The options at this level are mind-boggling and there’s loads of space for us to be truly creative.

Unsurprisingly, the biggest range of ingredients is to be found in the middle of the range, so there’s lots of room for us to be critical and discerning when creating perfect combinations.

In other words, whatever your budget, we will be delighted to work with you to create a truly amazing trip.
