Why we do it

Conservation

a huge conservation success story

At heart we are conservationists, we are ruled by a burning desire to help protect the magical wild places that we love.

Back in 1999, when we first came up with the crazy idea to start a safari company, the primary purpose was to further conservation.

In many developing countries, where government finances are tight, environmental tourism has been the only significant source of income for conservation.

It is sustainable tourism which will continue to provide vast, permanent and sustainable homes for iconic wildlife into the future.

Africa has led the way. The enormous success of safari travel on this continent has led to a massive expansion of the area of land area under conservation and an enormous improvements in the level of protection those areas now provide to their landscapes and wildlife. It has been a huge success story.

We are now trying to build on that success and pioneer similar approaches to conservation in other countries on other continents.

your safari will have a significant positive impact on the places that you visit

We are very much focused on the authenticity, sustainability and conservation benefits of your trip.

We do our best to ensure that as much revenue as possible is generated for national park authorities, conservation bodies and (perhaps most importantly) those safari operators who really have conservation in their hearts.

Your trip should not only be one of the best things you will ever do, but will also have a really positive impact.

Our main mission is to deliver remarkable safari experiences that you cannot wait to broadcast to your family, friends and colleagues. In this way you inadvertently become an ambassador for conservation and help to spread the word.

Conservation through sustainable tourism is working.

In the years since our foundation, we have paid over fifty million dollars in direct conservation fees and contributed over half a billion dollars of turnover to the world of safari.

Over the same period, we have seen the areas under protection grow by over 40%.

Now that almost all of the better known safari areas are suitably protected, we are moving on to a raft of lesser-known but equally fabulous locations, supporting pioneer operators and starting to generate sustainable revenue streams

Needless to say, success stories like this never get reported in the mainstream media, but this is the reality. Conservation has never been stronger.

We are now very optimistic that, with your help, we will be able to protect the world’s most prized natural assets, through the period of peak human population, to reach an era when the planet as a whole is managed on a more sustainable basis.

In more advanced countries, governments tend to be in a better position to provide funding for conservation, especially through networks of national parks and other conservation areas.

That takes a lot of pressure off us, since we don’t necessarily need to maintain visitor numbers and park fee revenues in order to ensure the integrity of each reserve.

But environmental tourism remains a powerful tool for good.

For example, in the Patagonia region of South America, the initiation of puma tourism is slowly convincing local ranchers to stop trapping and shooting these wonderful cats. The same can be said for jaguars in the Pantanal area of Brazil.

In wildlife areas from India to Borneo, Galápagos to Peru, it is the presence of environmental tourism which provides local people with both financial and cultural incentives to protect their natural landscapes and precious wildlife.

Both we and our guests are very proud to be able to contribute to that work.
