protected forest corridor for elephants and primates

Danum Valley lies within the upper reaches of the Segama River basin, bordered by the greater Ulu Segama Forest Reserve. The terrain consists of low hills, ridges, and river valleys covered in dense primary forest, with trees often exceeding 60 metres in height.

Access is strictly controlled, with limited accommodation and research facilities concentrated around the field centre and the Danum Valley Rainforest Lodge. This isolation has allowed the area to retain its original structure and biodiversity with minimal human disturbance.

The forest supports one of the highest concentrations of wildlife anywhere in Borneo. Regular sightings include orangutans, gibbons, and red leaf monkeys, along with civets, deer, and the occasional pygmy elephant. Clouded leopards and sun bears are present but rarely seen.

Visitor activities are centred on guided forest walks, canopy walkways, and night drives from the lodge. Trails are well maintained and designed to showcase the main habitats around the Segama River.

The climate is hot and humid year round with frequent rain, especially from November to February. Wildlife viewing is productive at any time of year, although the period from March to October offers the driest and most comfortable conditions.

A stay of two to three nights allows ample time to explore the main trails and canopy areas, often as part of a wider journey through Sabah’s eastern reserves.

Danum Valley is reached by road from Lahad Datu, which connects by daily flight to Kota Kinabalu.
