frequent primate sightings at close range

The lower Kinabatangan lies around 90 minutes southeast of Sandakan, following a corridor of riparian forest and floodplain wetland. Although much of the surrounding land is plantation, the riverine forest remains a vital refuge for wildlife and one of Borneo’s most productive ecosystems.

Wildlife is abundant and unusually visible. Regular sightings include orangutans, proboscis monkeys, macaques, and pygmy elephants, with crocodiles and monitor lizards along the water’s edge. Birdlife is exceptional, with eight hornbill species and frequent encounters with kingfishers, bee-eaters, and raptors.

The Kinabatangan floodplain forms a key link in Sabah’s wildlife corridor network, connecting coastal and interior forests.

Accommodation is concentrated along the river near Sukau and Bilit, ranging from simple cabins to comfortable lodges.

Activities include motorboat safari and short walking safari. River levels vary seasonally, but wildlife viewing remains consistent throughout the year.

The climate is hot and humid, with rain is most frequent from November to February but usually brief. The drier period from March to October offers more stable water levels and better light for photography.

A stay of two to three nights is sufficient to explore several stretches of the river and see a wide range of species.

The Kinabatangan River is reached by road from Sandakan, which has daily flights from Kota Kinabalu. Travel onward to Tabin or Danum Valley is arranged through Lahad Datu, around three hours by road from the Sukau area.
