When is the best time of year for gorilla tracking
How to choose your month when gorilla tracking
Choosing the right month for gorilla tracking comes down to balancing hiking difficulty, atmosphere, crowd levels, photography, and logistics. Bwindi, Virunga, and Odzala Kokoua each behave very differently through the year, so the same month can deliver very different experiences depending on where you go.
If your priority is the easiest trekking conditions, the long dry seasons are the most reliable. Bwindi is at its most accessible from June to August, while Virunga runs from June to September. Trails are firmer, hikes are typically shorter, and sightings are more predictable. Virunga is especially consistent during this period, making it a strong choice for first time trekkers or travelers who value dependable conditions.
If you are drawn to a more immersive rainforest experience, wetter and shoulder months can be deeply rewarding. Bwindi becomes misty and atmospheric during March, April, October, and November, with fewer visitors and a stronger sense of wilderness. Odzala shines during its drier windows of January to March and October to November, when the forest is lush and vibrant but trekking is slightly easier than during peak rains.
For travelers seeking solitude, March through May and October through November are the quietest months in both Bwindi and Virunga. Odzala remains low traffic year round due to its remote location and limited access, regardless of season.
Photography conditions vary by destination. Clearer light and better visibility are most common during drier months, particularly January, February, June, July, August, and December in Virunga, and January, February, June, July, and December in Bwindi. Odzala offers softer, diffused forest light throughout the year, ideal for intimate wildlife moments rather than wide scenic shots.
Logistics should also influence your timing. Virunga is the most predictable year round, with minimal seasonal disruption. Bwindi is manageable outside periods of heavy rain, while Odzala requires flexibility due to humidity, dense forest, and its remote setting.
If you are planning a combination safari, seasonality becomes even more important. The May to September dry season in Bwindi is excellent for gorilla tracking, but it conflicts with conditions in Kidepo Valley and Murchison Falls, where extreme heat or dryness can limit wildlife viewing. For these combinations, March to April or October to November often provide a better overall balance.

Month-by-month guide to the best time of year for gorilla tracking
January
Uganda (Bwindi) : January is part of the short dry season in Bwindi. Trails are firm, with mud and slippery sections reduced, making trekking easier. Nights and early mornings can be cool, dropping to around 7 °C (45 °F), so layered clothing is essential. Visitor traffic is moderate, providing a balance between solitude and availability. While safari connections are good, northern regions like Kidepo Valley or Murchison Falls remain dry and less suitable for combination trips.
Rwanda (Virunga) : The Virunga Mountains experience dry and stable conditions in January. Trails are firm, treks are manageable, and gorilla groups are generally found within 1–2 hours of the park headquarters. Soft morning light makes this an excellent month for photography. The stable weather also allows for smooth integration with Rwanda’s other safari options.
Congo (Odzala) : January is part of one of the drier windows in Odzala, easing footing slightly compared to the rest of the year. The forest remains dense, humid, and deeply tropical, so tracking requires patience. Gorillas are more accessible when fruiting draws them into clearer feeding areas, and the lowland rainforest provides an immersive experience for those prepared for remote, challenging conditions.
February
Uganda (Bwindi) : February continues the dry season. Trails remain firm, and tracking effort is moderate. Vegetation is slightly thinner than later in the wet season, improving visibility and making gorilla spotting easier. Early morning temperatures can still be cool, so warm layers are advisable.
Rwanda (Virunga) : Similar to January, February is dry and predictable. Gorilla families are usually accessible in lower zones, tracking distances are moderate, and mornings are cool. Soft light and stable conditions provide excellent opportunities for photography.
Congo (Odzala) : Although slightly drier than peak wet months, Odzala remains humid and dense. Visibility is limited in thick undergrowth, and tracking requires patience. Gorillas may be spread out, feeding in fruiting trees, which can extend trek duration.

March
Uganda (Bwindi) : March is the early rainy season. Rainfall increases slightly, but showers are usually light and brief. Trails soften, and trekking times become more variable. Gorilla families may move further afield in search of fresh food, adding an element of unpredictability. Mist and low cloud are frequent, creating excellent conditions for atmospheric photography. Visitor numbers remain low, though there is a small peak around Easter. March is less suitable if combining with Murchison Falls.
Rwanda (Virunga) : Rain begins to increase in March, and trails can soften slightly, but trekking remains feasible with waterproof gear. Gorilla families may move into bamboo and hagenia zones. Mist and cloud add dramatic atmosphere to the forest, making photography particularly rewarding.
Congo (Odzala) : March sees the rainy season deepen. Forests become even more dense, and gorillas move into thicker feeding zones. Tracking slows, requires more effort, and is best suited to those seeking a full rainforest immersion.
April
Uganda (Bwindi) : April is one of the wettest months of the early rainy season. Trails are muddy and slippery, making trekking more challenging, but the forest is vividly green and dramatic. Visitor traffic is very light, providing solitude for trekkers. Combination trips with Kidepo or Murchison Falls are less practical at this time.
Rwanda (Virunga) : Rwanda experiences wet, misty conditions in April. Trails remain passable, but trekking is more demanding. Mist enhances the forest atmosphere, offering excellent opportunities for moody and dramatic photography.
Congo (Odzala) : The wet season intensifies. Trails become boggy and difficult, and trekking requires extra effort. The forest is alive, vibrant, and immersive, rewarding those who navigate the challenging conditions.

May
Uganda (Bwindi) : May marks the onset of the long dry season in some parts of Bwindi. Trails firm up, making trekking more straightforward, though mornings and nights remain cool. Visitor traffic begins to increase in anticipation of the peak June–August period, so early booking of lodges and gorilla permits is recommended. This month is less suitable for combining with Kidepo or Murchison Falls due to local climatic conflicts.
Rwanda (Virunga) : Rwanda sees a transition toward the dry season. Trails become more manageable, and gorilla families are accessible within moderate trekking distances.
Congo (Odzala) : While rain persists in May, there are occasional drier spells that make trekking slightly easier. Fruiting cycles attract gorillas into more accessible areas, offering improved opportunities for observation.
June
Uganda (Bwindi) : June is firmly in the long dry season. Trails are stable and trekking is comfortable, though mornings remain cool. Gorilla families often feed on mid-slopes, making encounters easier.
Rwanda (Virunga) : June offers excellent conditions with firm trails, clear visibility, and predictable trekking. Gorilla families are accessible, and photography conditions are ideal.
Congo (Odzala) : Rainfall decreases in June, stabilizing the ground. The forest remains humid, but trekking is generally easier than during the peak wet season.

July
Uganda (Bwindi) : July is the peak of the dry season. Trails are firm and visibility is excellent. This is one of the best months for first-time gorilla trackers due to manageable treks and pleasant conditions.
Rwanda (Virunga) : July is the peak tracking month in Virunga. Dry, stable conditions allow reliable access to gorilla families, making it ideal for both tracking and photography.
Congo (Odzala) : Conditions are slightly drier than surrounding months, but the forest remains dense and humid. Tracking requires patience and careful navigation.
August
Uganda (Bwindi) : The dry season continues in August. Trails remain firm and tracking is comfortable, but visitor traffic peaks, necessitating early booking for lodges and permits.
Rwanda (Virunga) : Conditions are similar to July with firm trails, dry weather and accessible gorilla groups.
Congo (Odzala) : Rainfall is intermittent. The forest remains dense and humid, with tracking possible but visibility limited.

September
Uganda (Bwindi) : September brings early short rains. The first half of the month resembles the dry season, while the latter half is wetter. Trails soften, mist returns, and tracking becomes less predictable. This month can still be compatible with combination trips to northern or western safaris.
Rwanda (Virunga) : Cloud cover and mist increase, but trails remain passable. Gorilla families are generally accessible, though treks may be slightly longer.
Congo (Odzala) : Rainfall increases, the forest becomes dense and lush, and trekking slows. Patience is required, but the rainforest is spectacular.
October
Uganda (Bwindi) : October is part of the late rainy season. Trails are muddy and slippery, making tracking more challenging, though the forest is dense, dramatic, and atmospheric. Visitor traffic is low, offering excellent solitude. This is a suitable month for combining with northern and western Uganda safari areas.
Rwanda (Virunga) : The forest is wet and lush, but trails remain passable. Mist and cloud create excellent conditions for moody, atmospheric photography.
Congo (Odzala) : Heavy rainfall continues. The forest is vibrant and green, and tracking is slower but still rewarding for those prepared for difficult conditions.

November
Uganda (Bwindi) : Rain persists, trails remain slippery, and tracking is more demanding. Visitor traffic is very low, offering quiet conditions. November is compatible with northern and western safari combinations.
Rwanda (Virunga) : Short rains taper; trails are wet but accessible. Tracking is feasible, and gorilla families can be located within moderate distances.
Congo (Odzala) : Heavy rainfall continues. The forest remains dense, humid, and slow-going, but offers a dramatic rainforest experience.
December
Uganda (Bwindi) : December sees a return of the short dry season. Trails firm up, tracking becomes easier, and mornings are cool, requiring layered clothing. Visitor traffic is moderate.
Rwanda (Virunga) : Dry season stabilizes, trails are firm, visibility is excellent, and gorilla tracking is reliable.
Congo (Odzala) : Some drying occurs compared to the wet season, making tracking more manageable. Gorillas may feed in accessible areas, allowing easier observation
