Where to stay when tracking gorillas in Africa

Where to stay when tracking gorillas

Where you stay is an important part of the gorilla tracking experience. Across the three main gorilla tracking areas, Bwindi Forest, the Virunga Mountains and Odzala Kokoua National Park, accommodation ranges from refined forest lodges to immersive wilderness camps, all prioritising proximity to gorillas within carefully protected conservation areas.

It’s important to us to select lodges based on their location, access to gorilla families and overall experience rather than luxury alone, thereby ensuring your trek is smoother, more intimate and deeply rewarding.

Where to stay when tracking gorillas in Bwindi Forest

Bwindi offers the greatest choice of accommodation of any gorilla tracking destination in Africa. Lodges are spread across multiple tracking sectors, but in practice the forest works best when approached from two main bases.

The Buhoma sector, in the north, is the most accessible area and has the widest selection of high quality lodges. This is where many first time trackers stay, with reliable access to several habituated gorilla families and short transfers on tracking mornings. Lodges here range from comfortable mid-range properties to refined high-end stays, all positioned close to park headquarters and established trailheads.

The Nkuringo sector, in the south, is quieter, more remote and more dramatic. Fewer lodges operate here, but those that do offer sweeping forest views, fewer visitors and access to less frequently trekked gorilla families. This area suits travellers who value solitude, scenery and a deeper sense of immersion in the forest.

Rather than choosing one sector over the other, we recommend splitting time between Buhoma and Nkuringo, visiting gorilla families on both sides of the forest and connecting the two areas with a guided forest walk over several nights. This approach gives a far richer understanding of Bwindi’s scale, biodiversity and conservation challenges.

Our top-rated lodges in Bwindi include Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge in Nkuringo, which remains the standout option for privacy, dramatic views, and access to quieter southern gorilla families. Mahogany Springs Safari Lodge in Buhoma which offers one of the best balances of comfort, service and value with excellent trailhead access, and Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge which provides a more polished, upscale experience with elevated bandas, spa facilities and strong forest immersion

Where to stay when tracking gorillas in Virunga Mountains

Accommodation in the Virunga Mountains is concentrated around Kinigi, close to Volcanoes National Park headquarters. Compared to Bwindi, there are fewer lodges, but a much sharper contrast between ultra-luxury properties and simpler, trekking-focused stays.

At the top end are architectural, conservation-driven lodges set directly at the base of the volcanoes. These offer exceptional comfort, privacy and service, often paired with reforestation and community initiatives. They are among the most expensive safari lodges in Africa, but deliver an extraordinary sense of place and polish.

A strong middle tier balances comfort, character and access, offering panoramic volcano views and reliable service without the extreme price point of the ultra-luxury lodges.

Our favorite lodges in the Virungas are Bisate Reserve which we feel delivers the most exclusive experience in the region, with private villas set within rewilded forest at the foot of the volcanoes. Alternatively, Bisate Lodge offers similarly immersive design and comfort in a slightly more social lodge setting. Finally, Sabyinyo Lodge provides a softer, community-linked luxury option with panoramic views and dependable access.

Where to stay when tracking gorillas in Odzala Kokoua

Odzala-Kokoua is a completely different proposition. There is no road access, no budget tier and no lodge hopping by vehicle. Accommodation consists of a small number of remote, fly-in wilderness camps, each positioned in a distinct ecosystem of the Congo Basin. Here, staying is not about choosing luxury versus value, but about choosing experiences. While one camp focuses on western lowland gorilla tracking in primary rainforest, offering close encounters in a raw, untamed environment, another is centred on swamp forest clearings and river systems, where forest elephants, buffalo and birds gather in open baïs, and a third sits at the meeting point of forest, river and savanna, providing habitat diversity and a broader wildlife perspective.

We recommend Ngaga Camp which is the heart of gorilla tracking in Odzala, offering access to habituated lowland gorilla groups in deep rainforest. Alternatives include, Lango Camp overlooks a forest baï, ideal for observing elephants, buffalo and wetland wildlife, and Mboko Camp provides habitat diversity and acts as a natural entry and exit point for Odzala itineraries

The best way to experience Odzala is to combine camps, moving through the landscape over several days. Comfort is understated but thoughtful, and the reward is complete immersion in one of Africa’s last true wildernesses.
