reliable and well-managed lodge at the Menanggul confluence

Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge is located on the middle section of the Kinabatangan River, close to the small village of Sukau in eastern Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.

This long-running, larger lodge is one of the better-known options in the area and provides a convenient, comfortable base for exploring the Kinabatangan’s diverse riverine habitats. The property is reached by a combination of road and river transfer from Sandakan, and it sits close to the confluence with the Menanggul River, an area well-known for proboscis monkeys, hornbills and occasional pygmy elephants.

The main area consists of an open-sided restaurant, small bar and lounge, all overlooking the river and surrounded by tall trees that attract birdlife. Boardwalks link the rooms through lush gardens and forest patches, and proboscis monkeys, macaques and hornbills are often seen from the lodge itself.

Rooms

Guest accommodation is in thirty-three wooden chalets spread through the gardens and along raised boardwalks. Rooms are simply but neatly presented, with proper beds, air-conditioning, ceiling fans and en-suite bathrooms with hot showers and flush toilets.

Each room has a small verandah with seating and views of the gardens or forest edge. Décor is plain and functional with the overall comfort being good by Kinabatangan standards.
