Safari to Aus
Aus
a small roadside town
on the road to Luderitz
striking desert scenery with wild horses
Set in the south of Namibia, Aus is a small roadside settlement on the road out to the port of Luderitz.
The small town owes its existence to the single track railway that the Germans built from the coast at Luderitz to the inland farming centre of Keetmanshoop.
The Aus area contains some truly beautiful desert scenery. From here it is possible to explore the large Gondwana Sperrgebiet Reserve, just to the north, which is particularly renowned for its feral pedigree horses.
The area also contains some points of minor historic interest, notably a small WW2 cemetery.
But the main reason to stay in Aus is to use it as a base from which to visit the coastal town of Luderitz, 60 km to the east, whilst avoiding the potentially adverse coastal weather.
