the chance to get up close with cheetahs

Otjiwarongo is a largely flat and arid landscape, through which virtually all visitors drive between Windhoek and Etosha.

Although these are not wild areas, there are points of interest, notably two of the continent’s leading animal conservation projects.

The Cheetah Conservation Fund is arguably the more serious project, with simpler accommodation and offering a more intellectual experience.

The much larger Africat at Okonjima offers a higher standard of accommodation and is far more experiential.

The other main point of interest is the Waterberg Plateau, which offers some pleasant hiking trails.

Most of the other ‘safari’ options around here are rather tame and artificial, this is not a wild area.

The Otjiwarongo area lies on the main overland route between the two most visited locations in Namibia, Windhoek and Etosha. Since this is quite a long drive, it often makes sense to break the journey, meaning that the lodges in this area frequently feature in trips.

The usual stay duration is 1-2 nights.

Seasonality

Although the activities in the Otjiwarongo area are relatively unseasonal, they are perhaps more enjoyable during the May-Nov dry season.

Getting there

Access to the Otjiwarongo area is most commonly by self-drive vehicle, usually when travelling between Windhoek and Etosha.
