Penang
Penang
is an island of diverse cultural heritage
in the Strait of Malacca.
centuries of Malay Chinese Indian and European presence
George Town and the wider island of Penang cover a compact area but contain a broad mix of cultural and natural interest.
The historic core is recognised by UNESCO for its concentration of shop houses, temples, clan houses and civic buildings which reflect centuries of Malay Chinese Indian and European presence. A simple street grid makes it easy to explore on foot and there are many small museums markets and food courts.
Away from the city the interior of the island rises to a central ridge of hills with secondary forest. Penang Hill provides cooler air views across the sea and a sense of the original rainforest. Access is by funicular railway, which keeps the experience straightforward without long walks.
For time by the sea the north coast around Batu Ferringhi has relaxed beach areas with easy access from the main city districts.
