expansive but beautifully integrated rainforest and beach resort

The Datai Langkawi is set within a vast expanse of 10-million-year-old primary rainforest overlooking the Andaman Sea.

Occupying a sizeable footprint on forested slopes that descend to a private crescent of beach, the property is architecturally impressive and remarkably well maintained, but significantly larger than the type of intimate lodges we usually recommend. It nevertheless offers a genuine sense of place, with dense canopy, natural waterways and thriving wildlife within the grounds.

The main buildings sit high on the hillside and open out to views of the sea and surrounding forest. Paths and boardwalks lead to clusters of rooms and villas hidden among the trees. Despite the resort scale, the natural environment dominates — hornbills, macaques and flying lemurs are frequently seen around the accommodation.

Rooms

Guest accommodation is in a mix of Canopy Rooms, Rainforest Villas, and Beach Villas, arranged along raised walkways and forest paths.

  • Canopy Rooms are set near the main building, with private balconies looking into the rainforest canopy.
  • Rainforest Villas are built on stilts along the forest stream, offering greater privacy and the feeling of being enclosed by the jungle.
  • Beach Villas sit at sea level beside Datai Bay, each with a private pool and direct beach access.

All categories include king or twin beds, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, generous bathrooms with baths and walk-in showers, minibars and espresso machines.
