Travel to Walvis Bay
Walvis Bay
is a utilitarian working port
in west Namibia
a fabulous lagoon filled with marine wildlife
Walvis Bay is a utilitarian working port, set around a broad and impressive lagoon, surrounded by epic desert dune fields.
The lagoon provides the chance to interact with whales, dolphins and seals.
The town itself is fronted by a major commercial port. The whole place is rather utilitarian and largely focused on industry.
To the south lie extensive industrial salt extraction works, followed by an endless expanse of enormous orange dunes, all the way down to the magical Sandwich Harbour, which can be reached on guided day trips.
All in all, Walvis Bay is a fascinating if unconventional place to explore.

Where to stay
The vast majority of travellers choose to stay in the more appealing Swakopmund just to the north and visit from there.
A major exception is those staying at the remote and unusual Pelican Point to the south.
