a little-visited area

Brandberg is a huge granite massif over 30 km in diameter and 2500 metres in height.

The massif offers some very serious hiking and trekking, although these routes are rarely asked for my our guests.

There is also some impressive rock-art, including the famous White Lady Cave.

On the northern side lies the ephemeral Ugab River, which is an important corridor for desert elephants, which can be found here as reliably as in the better-known Twyfelfontein area.

Considering its central location, the Brandberg area is relatively little-visited. It is certainly worth considering if you want to get off the beaten track without driving too far.

The usual stay duration is 2-3 nights.

Seasonality

Brandberg can be visited year round, but the elephants are easier to find during the May-Jan dry season.

Access

Brandberg is usually accessed by self-drive or private-guided overland safaris, usually in between Swakopmund and Twyfelfontein.

Note that overland safaris may be able to use the remote tracks on the west side of Brandberg, where self-drive access is more likely to be from the main road in the east.

Where to stay

The Brandberg area contains two interesting lodge options …

The upmarket Sorris Sorris Lodge lies to the northeast of Brandberg and is easily accessed by light aircraft or self-drive vehicle.

The pleasantly earthy Ozondjou Trails is also located on the river to the northeast and is usually accessed as part of a guided overland expedition.

largely overlooked, but well worth exploring
