options to explore the surrounding desert

Swakopmund is the main town on the Namibia Coast, squeezed between the searing desert dunes and the angry cold Atlantic.

This strangely appealing town has a distinctly German flavour, dating back to the Colonial Era.

There are loads of options for exploring the deserts and lagoons of the area.

Due to its central location, Swakopmund features in the vast majority of lower cost and self-drive trips around the country.

Spending a night or two in town can actually provide quite a nice break from the relentless desert experiences.

Swakopmund most commonly features in self-drive trips, usually between Sossusvlei in the south and Twyfelfontein in the north.

It is also possible to include the town in flying safaris, usually coming in from Sossusvlei or Namibrand in the south and heading on to Damaraland North or Etosha in the north.

Where to stay

There’s a very wide range of accommodation options, from conventional town hotels to some rather quirky and intimate guesthouses.
