a fabulously remote and windswept backwater

Set in the south of Namibia, Luderitz is a fabulously windswept and desolate historic colonial outpost, gateway to the infamous diamond coast and with the famous ghost town of Kolmanskop and exposed to the relentless Atlantic winds.

Originally valued as a port, Luderitz really hit the headlines when diamonds were discovered here in 1908. The ensuing diamond rush was of legendary proportions, with prospectors being inspired by tales of desert valleys littered with huge gems. The town grew rapidly, as successful prospectors lavished their wealth on extravagant villas.

After the diamond rush subsided the town fell into a deep obscurity. Only recently has there been a modest recovery, as tourists have started to arrive in slightly higher numbers. The waterfront is now rather pleasant, with boat trips in search of seals, whales and dolphins.

A famous draw is the abandoned diamond settlement of Kolmanskop. Here the desert is slowly and eerily reclaiming the land back from the prospectors.

Another major highlight are full day guided tours into the fabulous and previously forbidden diamond areas. These remote coastal deserts are endlessly fascinating and not to be missed.

Access to Luderitz is by self-drive, usually between Fish River Canyon and Sossusvlei.
