Safari to Etosha East

At 22,270 square kilometres, Etosha National Park is an enormous and well known wildlife reserve in northcentral Namibia.

Etosha East is one of four sub-areas of the Etosha area. It covers a large tract of land outside the West Gate of the main national park, the main entrance when approaching from the Victoria Falls and Caprivi Strip direction.

This particular area includes a handful of large private reserves which contain a good range of accommodation options, from lower cost road-side lodges to more remote and high quality camps.

From this particular area it is easy to access the eastern side of the national park around Fischer’s Pan, which tends to be the more productive side for wildlife viewing during the Nov-Feb period when the animals tend to move this side in advance of the rains.

These best of the accommodation options in this area (those on the Onguma Reserve) are able to provide a more peaceful bush environment in which to undertake safari activities (variously including vehicle safari, walking safari and bush meals), which you can supplement by raiding into the national park for further wildlife viewing should you feel the need to see what all the fuss is about.

For self-drive trips around Namibia we most commonly recommend combining a lodge in each of the Etosha East and Etosha South areas.

If you are planning a flying safari which includes Etosha, then you will most likely stay at a lodge in the Etosha South area.

If you are visiting on the way back from a guided safari in the remote northwest of the country then you are more likely to stop in the Etosha West area, possibly adding one of Etosha East or Etosha South.
