desert traverse north to Swakopmund

Set in the southwest of Namibia, North Namib is divided into two distinct areas.

The inland rocky desert contains the main road between Sossusvlei and Swakopmund, as well as a few roadside lodges.

A major feature is the Kuiseb Canyon, setting of the superb book “The Sheltering Desert” about conscientious objectors during WW2.

The area is also home to the remote fuel stop at Solitaire, with its legendary apple pie.

The main dune-sea is a fabulously remote area which is only accessible by expedition.

The North Namib dune sea is a magical remote area with abandoned diamond mines, shipwrecks and secret freshwater oases.

These areas can only be visited on a fully-equipped guided overland expeditions of three or more nights.

North Namib can be visited year round but is usually at its most scenic May-Jan.

Getting there

The majority of visitors simply transit through this area on self-drive trips, usually when travelling between Sossusvlei and Swakopmund.

Where to stay

In addition to the guided expeditions into the dunes, the rocky desert contains a number of modest roadside lodges.
