Nkwichi Lodge
Nkwichi Lodge
is an elegant and pleasant outdoorsy outpost
on the remote eastern shore of Lake Malawi
a very cool and remote spot
Nkwichi Lodge is located just south of Likoma Island in the Lake Malawi area of Mozambique.
The expression ‘mchenga nkwichi’ means ‘squeaky sand’ in the local language and is the name the local fisherman traditionally use for this particular cove.
The lodge is split between a beach bar and a large circular main building.
Rooms
Guest accommodation at Nkwichi Lodge is in five chalets, each one very different from the next, but all with lots of space for adding one or two extra beds for children and with large outdoor bathrooms …
Chalet 1 : Kakoa : premier : This room is on a private cove and is completely open at the front, with a huge open ‘bathroom’ with a toilet set in a hut beyond. So quite a long way to go in the middle of the night.
Chalet 2 : Nkwazi : premier : This room faces west and has three double doors that can be left open to take advantage of the views. Again there is a large outdoor bathroom, but the toilet is inside the main building.
Chalet 3 : Kuya : standard : This room is built below a rock face, into which its outside bathroom is fitted, with the toilet is a separate shack.
Chalet 4 : Niassa : standard
Chalet 5 : Scotland : standard
Family house : Makolo : This house has two bedroom suites and an upstairs lounge area. It also has direct access to a private beach. Should you want complete privacy, the house can function separately from the main lodge, with meals being served here. The lodge is a ten minute walk away and guests are welcome to join in and use all the facilities there too.
Honeymoon house : Songea : This house has one large bedroom suite, extensive outdoor areas and direct access to a private beach. Should you want complete privacy, the house can function separately from the main lodge, with a separate staff being based here for serving meals and drinks. The lodge is a twenty minute walk away and guests are welcome to join in and use all the facilities there too.

Map
Set in the extreme northwest of Mozambique, Lake Malawi East is a very remote area. Since it is almost always accessed from the Malawi side, it is virtually never combined with other properties in Mozambique.
Getting there
Nkwichi Lodge is accessed by shared charter flight from Lilongwe International Airport (often connecting in from the South Luangwa area of eastern Zambia) to the local airport on Likoma Island, from where it is a boat transfer of around 60 minutes to the lodge.
