This is a lovely rural area, characterised by a patchwork of forest and small protected reserves.
Unlike the typical rural settlements in the region, Bonito town is geared up for  domestic tourism.
It is surprising that the best location for viewing giant anteaters should be in a working rural area ...
... but sightings here are surprisingly reliable ...
... with visitors able to carefully approach, almost to touching distance.
Bonito is much better known for its caves, notably the Gruta do Lago Azul ...
... and a number of local streams, which are renowned for their clarity.
Lago Misteriosa is one notable swimming spot ...
... with local legend claiming that it is of 'infinite depth'.
Another major highlight is the Buraco das Araras ...
... a large sinkhole that is home to a population of huge red-and-green macaws.
All in all, the Bonito area is a lovely low-key extension to a visit to the Pantanal.
