Hotel Fazenda Baía das Pedras sits deep in the Nhecolândia sub-region of the South Pantanal, around 300km from Campo Grande.

The lodge was built in 1940 and renovated in 2003, and is owned by hosts Rita and Dóio, who are, incredibly friendly and passionate about their little slice of the Pantanal, and with only five rooms the lodge feels very intimate.

The layout is open plan, villa-style throughout, with hammocks scattered across the property for guests to use between activities. On our visit the food was excellent, wood-fired meat, fresh local produce and fish.

Bird life around the lodge is exceptional, with hyacinth macaws and multiple other macaw species regular visitors, and the open Nhecolândia landscape around the property gives clean, photogenic backgrounds for wildlife.

What this lodge does exceptionally well is anteater, armadillo and tapir, alongside a genuinely authentic pantaneiro cowboy culture that few other properties can match.

Activities

Hotel Fazenda Baía das Pedras provides the following guided activities, with the day fully customised around each guest party rather than run to a fixed timetable:

Tapir and giant anteater sightings at the open water in the right season are strong, and this is one of the best places in the Pantanal for giant armadillo, thanks to the long-running research project based here. Guests with a real interest in the science can sometimes join researchers in the field when a team is on-site. Horseback riding is also an important activity, with sixteen trained pantaneiro horses and, when possible, being able to follow the pantaneiro during their daily ranching duties. There is no river-based jaguar viewing at Baía das Pedras.
