Travel to Lumbini
Lumbini
is the birthplace of Buddha
down on the southern plains
pilgrims in search of enlightenment
The town of Lumbini is located down on the southern plains, around 200km (125 miles) southwest of Kathmandu, close to the border with India.
According to legend, Lumbini is the location where Queen Mahamayadevi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in 623 BC. Twenty nine years later he achieved enlightenment and became the Buddha, founding the religion.
This small town is therefore a great place of pilgrimage for Buddhists.
The main points of interest in the area are a marble column erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC on the exact location of Buddha’s birth and several impressive temples, set within pretty formal gardens.
