Safari to South Georgia
South Georgia
is an extremely remote island
in the South Atlantic
one of the greatest wildlife locations in the world
South Georgia is an extremely remote island in the South Atlantic, 1500 km east of the nearest airport on the Falkland Islands and 2000 km from the nearest mainland port, Ushuaia in southern Argentina.
The island is renowned for its rugged mountainous terrain and extraordinary wildlife. This is arguably the best location in the world for viewing albatrosses, penguins, elephant seals, fur seals and various marine life.
There is also some significant human history here, with the well-preserved remains of various historic whaling stations. It was also the place where Shackleton completed his famous rescue mission in 1917.

South Georgia is usually visited in combination with the Antarctica Peninsula. Since the latter area has a shorter season and is usually best visited Nov-Feb, this is usually the deciding factor.
Trip planning
The islands can only be visited by cruise ship, but really large vessels are thankfully not permitted. Trips tend to be more expeditionary in nature, with interesting activities by motorboat and on foot, unusually including some dramatic hiking options.
Almost all cruises to South Georgia combine with the Antarctic Peninsula, sometimes also including the Falkland Islands.
