Okavango Selinda South

The Selinda Spillway is an ephemeral channel that connects the flood areas of the Linyanti and Okavango.

Depending on the relative flood levels in the two areas each season, the channel can flow in either direction, to equalise water levels across the region. Some years it does not flow at all.

The better known area for safari is the Linyanti Selinda, which surrounds the northern end of the channel. This Selinda South area is much more remote and peripheral, mainly due to the unreliability of the floodwaters.

However, this does give the area a greater sense of remoteness and there is always enough wildlife around to keep days interesting. Notably the area is often strong for dry forest species like roan and sable antelopes.

Selinda South therefore lends itself to experiences Botswana travellers, in search of new areas to explore.

It can also offer good value, so can serve as an authentic entry level location, far better than most other mid-priced areas, which tend to be reduced due to overcrowding.

The best time of year to visit is the May-Jul early dry season period, when floodwaters are most likely.

The area has two camps, Okavango Explorers Camp and Maxa.
