Kulandila Camp
Kulandila Camp
is a peaceful outpost
in the South Luangwa area

independent, family-owned and elegantly simple
Kulandila Camp is located in the South Luangwa South area of eastern Zambia.
Positioned on raised ground beneath tall leadwoods overlooking a quiet river channel, Kulandila Camp is the smaller sister to Sungani, sharing its exceptional remoteness, strong guiding and family ownership, but with a simpler, more natural finish and a slightly more adventurous feel.
The setting here is a little wilder, with great views over the river course and an atmosphere of calm isolation. Interiors are soft and stylish but more minimal than at Sungani, aimed at guests seeking a light footprint and immersion in the bush rather than high-end luxury.
The central area is built around a series of raised wooden walkways and decks, with a shaded lounge, dining space, bar and fire pit. The whole camp is run on solar, with limited Wi-Fi and a clear focus on conservation and low impact.
Animals in camp
As with most camps in the valley, it is often possible to view a lot of animals in and around Kulandila Camp, especially elephants and antelopes. The dry river channel often acts as a corridor for wildlife.
Rooms
Guest accommodation at Kulandila Camp is in just four guest tents …
Standard Tents : 4
These stylish, open-plan tents are set on raised wooden decks with views across the channel. Each tent has a netted double or twin bed, indoor seating, private verandah, and a private bathroom with flushing toilet and indoor/outdoor shower. No aircon, but solar-powered fans. No plunge pools.
Activities
Kulandila Camp shares guiding and operational support with Sungani Lodge, which ensures high standards of service and continuity between the two.
Wildlife densities here are steadily improving, and vehicle traffic is virtually non-existent, making for a relaxed and authentic safari.
Kulandila Camp provides the following guided activities …
- vehicle safari
- walking safari
- night vehicle safari
- seasonal boat safari

Map
South Luangwa is a very high quality safari area that often serves as the primary location in a trip.
The stay duration tends to be 5-8 nights split between two camps, or more occasionally 3-5 nights at one camp. Three camp combinations are also possible.
Kulandila Camp tends to be the second or third stop within South Luangwa, so most commonly features in longer and more comprehensive safaris.
Seasonality
The best time to visit South Luangwa is during the May-Oct dry season, when the wildlife is focused on the riverine areas and easy to find.
Within that period, May-Jul is pleasantly cool at night, but the animals may not yet be fully migrated back into the river.
Towards the end of that period, Oct-Nov the wildlife should be at its strongest, but the weather is likely to be uncomfortably hot, especially at night. Bear in mind that most camps do not have air-conditioning.
Getting around
South Luangwa lies to the east of the country and is usually accessed by light aircraft services from Lusaka or Livingstone.
Sungani lies in the far south of the Luangwa and is reached by light aircraft from Mfuwe Airport to the private Sungani Airstrip.
Charter flights between Sungani and destinations like Lower Zambezi or Liuwa Plain are also possible, and recommended for private groups looking to avoid multi-stop connections.
