Lusaka

Set in the centre of Zambia, Lusaka is the capital of the country, but of little interest to most safari travellers, who mostly pass through the international airport without having to overnight.

Day 1

Arrival : Lusaka

Latitude 15

Latitude 15 is located in the city of Lusaka.

The lodge is contained within one main building, with comfortable public areas and a decent swimming pool in the back garden.

Guest accommodation is in eighteen comfortable rooms, all in the same main building and arranged around a courtyard.

There is also a large swimming pool to the rear.

The Other Side is a separate building with bar, gym, spa and second pool.

Kafue

Set in western Zambia, some 200 km north of Victoria Falls, Kafue is a very large and impressive but vastly under-utilised wildlife reserve, with guest accommodation in around a dozen camps and lodges, offering a good range of well-guided safari activities, notably including lots of lions and excellent motorboat safari. No giraffes.

Musekese Kafue Camp

Musekese Kafue Camp is located in the Lufupa Sector of northern Kafue.

The camp is centred on a simple open-sided mess leading out to a nice campfire area above the river.

Guest accommodation is in just five large tented rooms.

Activities include vehicle safari, night vehicle safari, motorboat safari and serious walking safaris.

The primary activity is vehicle safari through the forests and open dambos around camp.

Night vehicle safari is also something of a speciality around here.

High quality walking safari often includes approaches onto larger wildlife, including elephants.

Motorboat safari on the Kafue River also often provides some interesting sightings.

Ntemwa Busanga Camp

Ntemwa Busanga Camp is located on the Busanga Plains in northern Kafue.

The camp is centred on a simple tented mess leading out to a campfire area and raised dining platform.

Guest accommodation is in four simple thatched Rooms, with attached private bathrooms.

Activities include vehicle safari, walking safari and night vehicle safari.

The primary activity is vehicle safari out on the Busanga Plains.

Walking safari is something of a speciality and may include deliberate approaches onto elephants and lions.

South Luangwa North

The northern sector of South Luangwa is relatively remote and very strong for wildlife, with guest accommodation in a fine selection of intimate camps and offering a range of very strong dry safari activities.

Nkonzi Camp is located in the South Luangwa North area.

The mess area is centred in a meru style tent.

Walking safari is also high on the agenda and may include deliberate approaches onto elephants and lions.

Lower Zambezi

Set 120 km southeast of Lusaka in Zambia, Lower Zambezi is a superb reserve, with very rich wildlife. Guest accommodation is in a handful of very high quality camps and lodges which notably also offer excellent canoe safari and motorboat safari out on the river.

The camp is located on Kulefu Island and is centred around a small tented mess.

Set in the northwest corner of Zimbabwe, across the river from Zambia, Victoria Falls is one of the most alluring locations in Africa, surprisingly pleasant and undeveloped, with guest accommodation in around 20 diverse hotels and lodges, offering a very wide range of safari, cultural and adrenaline-based activities.

Batonka Guest Lodge is located in Victoria Falls town.

The lodge is centred on a very nice Colonial Era bungalow, leading out to a nice swimming pool.

... some of which are arranged around the swimming pool.

The Flame Lily Wing is independent accommodation with 5 rooms, making it a good option for families or small groups.

Activities are centred on visits to the Victoria Falls, scenic flights, vehicle safari, motorboat safari, canoe safari and white-water rafting.

A visit to the falls themselves is surprisingly interesting and impressive.

Scenic flights over the falls can be done by helicopter, light aircraft or micro-light.

The are various high adrenaline options for bungee jumping, gorge swinging and zip-lining.

The gorge below the falls is one of the best locations in the world for white-water rafting.

Motorboat safari on the languid river above the falls can be surprisingly good for wildlife.

This is also a great location for canoeing, with the "Smoke that Thunders" beyond.

Some modest vehicle safari is available in various reserves in the area.

Walking safari is also possible in some locations.

Hwange

Set just 130 km south of Victoria Falls, Hwange is the most popular wildlife reserve in Zimbabwe, renowned for the quality of its safari guiding, rich and varied wildlife, authentic walking safari and superb hides, with guest accommodation in around 25 largely earthy and authentic lodges and camps.
