Olduvai Camp is located in the Serengeti Southcentral area of northern Tanzania.

This property is owned and operated by MKSC, a partly French-owned safari company which is actually the oldest of its type in Tanzania.

The camp is a simple affair, clustered around a prominent granite kopje, with an open-sided lounge and dining areas to one end. A steep path leads up to a lookout on the top of the outcrop.

The kopje is home to a good number of rock hyraxes, a rather cute animal which is renowned for being closely related to elephants and manatees.

There is also a family of genets which have lived in the area and visited the dining room with regularity every evening. The earliest generation we remember was from around 2002, a mother who the camp staff rather cutely named Genet Jackson, after the famous singer. The present incarnation must be her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Rooms

Guest accommodation at Olduvai Camp is in 17 tented ensuite rooms, ranged around the southern side, tucked in amongst the wild sisal or ‘oldupai’ plant, from which it derives its name.

Activities

Olduvai Camp provides the following guided activities, not all of which are necessarily included in the price …

  • Vehicle safari
  • Cultural interaction
  • Walking safari
  • Rock-art
  • Palaeontology

Serengeti Southcentral tends to feature in just about every overland safari through this region. It only tends to be bypassed by returning guests who fly directly into the Serengeti and skip the Ngorongoro Crater.

The usual stay duration is 1-3 nights.

Seasonality

The Serengeti Southcentral area can be visited year round, since the landscape, palaeontological and cultural elements are constant.

During Dec-Mar this is one of the most important areas for the migration calving event.

Getting around

Virtually everyone visiting Serengeti Southcentral does so as part of a guided overland safari, so they travel to their camp and around the area in their private vehicle.
