the coolest base for migration calving

Legendary Mwiba Lodge is located in the Serengeti Southwest area of northern Tanzania.

This property is owned and operated by Legendary Lodges, a very interesting company which is connected to one of the largest hunting operations in Tanzania.

The lodge is in a gorgeous situation, built into impressive boulders overlooking a rocky gorge on the small Arugusinyai River.

Public areas are extremely comfortable and are set upon multiple levels cascading down to a nice swimming pool. There is also a well equipped gym and extensive spa facility.

The place offers elevated levels of service, notably with very high quality dining and an extensive cellar.

Rooms

Guest accommodation at Legendary Mwiba Lodge is in ten superb suites, amongst the nicest in Africa.

Canvas in construction, it would be demeaning to describe them as tents. Fronted by a lovely verandah with views down to the river, each room contains a lounge, sleeping area and bathroom, with an outside shower at the far end.

Two further family suites have two separate bedrooms, connected in such a way that they could be shared by two couples too, with independent bathrooms.

  • Family Suite : x2

Activities

Legendary Mwiba Lodge provides the following guided activities, not all of which are usually included in the price …

  • Vehicle safari
  • Walking safari
  • Bush meals
  • Night vehicle safari

Long season

The lodge is open from May to March, closing for the main rains in April.

Serengeti Southwest tends to feature in a very high proportion of trips during the Dec-Mar migration calving season, when it is the epicentre for wildlife viewing.

We also like to include it during the converse May-Nov dry season, when visitor numbers are very low, but there is still good resident wildlife in some areas.

Getting around

The majority of people visiting Serengeti Southwest do so as part of a guided overland safari, so they travel to their camp and around the area in their private vehicle.

A few people visit Serengeti Southwest in isolation, flying in and out of the airstrip at Ndutu. In this case they travel around the reserve with a vehicle and guide from their camp.
