Beho Beho Camp
Beho Beho Camp
is a very high quality base
in the Selous area
situated away from the main river
Beho Beho Camp is located in the Selous area of southern Tanzania.
This property is independently owned and operated. It has long been recognised as one of the best camps in Selous since at least the early 1990s. The location is lovely, the camp is extremely comfortable and the hosting is elegant. This is an operation which has been well-polished over the years.
The lodge is set in what is effectively a private valley, with lovely views out over a small tributary of the Great Rufiji River and with its own private airstrip nearby. This is a low-traffic area and there are usually very few other vehicles around, which is quite a contrast to the areas further east where significant vehicle clustering can occur.
The camp itself is centred on an expansive main building, with very comfortable lounge areas and even a full-sized snooker table (the original Welsh owner of the camp having been a particularly keen player).
To one side is a small library and museum containing artefacts from the WW1 skirmishes which took place at the bottom of the hill. Above is the main dining room. Below the main area is a lovely pool area and a further location for dining.
Unusually for the Selous, Beho Beho Camp is located away from the main river. Since most people include Selous in their trip specifically to experience the main river, we tend to most commonly include the camp in combination with a riverside property.
Rooms
Guest accommodation at Beho Beho Camp is in nine large stone and thatch bandas, very well appointed and with very nice indoor and outdoor bathrooms.
Just out of sight of the main lodge is a two room private annex known as Bailey’s Banda, which can function completely independently.
There is also Beho Beho Treehouse, a very luxurious one night sleepout which is accessed on foot, but which is considerably more expensive than the other rooms.
Activities
Beho Beho Camp provides the following guided activities, most of which are usually included in the price …
- Vehicle safari
- Walking safari
- Bush meals
- Motorboat safari: only lake, not on the main river
- Night vehicle safari: may not be permitted

The Selous tends to feature in relatively few trips to Tanzania, mainly because it is obliged to compete for nights with the fabulous safari areas of the Serengeti region and the nearby Ruaha. It tends to be used most at the extremes, as a short first-time safari extension to a beach vacation or as part of a longer safari for more experienced safari travellers.
The usual stay duration is 3-4 nights in one camp. Multiple camp combinations here are relatively rare.
Seasonality
The best time of year for safari in Selous is generally considered to be the Jul-Oct dry season, when the wildlife is concentrated along the river, although this is also the period when visitor numbers and prices both reach their peaks.
Getting there
Selous is most commonly accessed by light aircraft, which fly directly into dirt airstrips in the bush. In this case your safari vehicle and guide is provided by the camps in which you are staying.
Selous can also be visited by means of an overland safari, usually out of Dar es Salaam, in which case you would usually undertake your vehicle safari with your private vehicle and guide, whilst the lodge provides your motorboat safari and walking safari options.
