Sarara Wilderness Samburu
Sarara Wilderness Samburu
is a quality mobile base
in the Samburu area
a great extension to related camps in the Mathew’s Range
Sarara Wilderness Samburu is located in the Samburu area of northcentral Kenya.
The original Sarara property was first established as a tented camp in the Mathew’s Range (a little further north from Samburu) back in 1997 by Piers and Hilary Bastard, in support of local conservation efforts. The operation is now hosted by son Jeremy and his girlfriend Katie.
Sarara Wilderness Samburu is a mobile camp, set on the bank of the ephemeral Ewaso Njiro River. It is almost always visited in combination with the other Sarara properties and is designed to provide access to the rich riverine wildlife areas of Samburu, whilst also trying to avoid the vehicle clusters that can occur in the central sectors of the national park.

Map
Samburu features in a relatively high proportion of trips to Kenya, being perhaps the second most popular area after the Maasai Mara.
The usual stay duration is 2-4 nights.
Seasonality
The best time of year to visit Samburu is generally considered to be the Jun-Oct dry season, but there are good reasons to visit during other months. In an area as naturally arid as this, the Jan-Mar green season can also be particularly interesting.
Getting there
The vast majority of guests staying at Sarara Wilderness Samburu do so in combination with other Sarara properties further north in the Mathew’s Range.
In this case, it is usually best to visit this camp first, flying in from Nairobi, spending 2-3 nights taking in the rich wildlife, before heading north overland to the wilder areas beyond.
After that combination, you might consider flying on down to the Maasai Mara for more safari, or out to the tropical coast.
