a wild and wonderful world

In the present era of peak humanity, it is easy to think that our species dominates every corner of the planet, but we really aren’t that special.

In truth, over 50% of the land area on our planet is wilderness. In the southern hemisphere this number rises to over 75%.

One day, we hope to offer adventurous and responsible travel to all of the great wilderness areas, in order that we can help raise their profile and encourage their continued protection.

Thus far, we have managed to add 35 countries to our portfolio, covering key locations in Africa, the Indian Subcontinent, South America and Antarctica.

We hope that you will let us show you some incredible trip options. There are far too many wonderful places to explore in a single lifetime, but we can certainly help introduce you to some of them.

Safari continents …

If you haven’t yet been on safari to Africa, then you may be wondering what all the fuss is about.

You probably have friends who have fallen in love with the continent and have been on multiple safaris. You can see their eyes light up when the topic comes up in conversation.

Africa is entrancing and addictive in so many different ways. A great safari delivers exoticism, excitement and adventure. But it is also uplifting, both with an intense connection with nature and the humbling experience of meeting so many wonderful people.

The best known savanna safari locations lie in Botswana, Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania, but there are many fabulous lesser-known locations in countries as diverse as Chad, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Of course, Africa also offers a huge diversity of other locations, including gorilla tracking in the tropical forests of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda, amazing desert explorations in Egypt, Kenya, Namibia and Sudan, fabulous tropical beaches in Mozambique and Zanzibar, deep history and culture in Ethiopia and elegant modern culture in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands.

As if that were not enough, responsible tourism in Africa has been a remarkable success story, driving conservation across the continents. Virtually every trip brings with it a positive impact.

a continent to fall in love with, time and time again

India is another location that shifts people’s universes. This place is so diverse, the experience is so intense, the impact on the senses is so powerful. Trips of a month or more are common, especially amongst guests returning for more.

The great thing about India is that it’s so strong for history, culture and wildlife. It’s the only location in the world that can offer the chance of four big cats in one trip (tigers, leopards, snow leopards and lions).

Up in the Himalayas to the north of India, the biggest draw are the remote and magical Bhuddist enclaves of Ladakh (in northwest India) and Bhutan. At lower altitudes are the tea plantations in areas like Darjeeling. Up top, mainly in Nepal, there are serious trekking locations, including Everest and Annapurna.

In the Indian Ocean just to the south of India lies the large island of Sri Lanka, with its diverse historic, cultural and wildlife highlights

Further south, far out in the ocean, lie the remarkable islands of the Maldives, arguably the ultimate tropical beach location in the world.

Obviously, these five countries add up to only a small part of Asia, there are loads of countries that we want to add to our portfolio, including Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Borneo. They will come in time, but only once we have developed suitably deep levels of expertise. Do please feel free to email us with any tips or suggestions.

a focus on the magical Indian Subcontinent

It seems trite to describe a huge continent like South America as diverse. You would expect nothing else. But what we really mean is that the trips we put together are so fundamentally different from each other.

For pure wildlife, the Pantanal area of Brazil is the prime location, with jaguars, tapirs, giant anteaters and a whole other cast of strange and unusual animals that you have probably never seen before in the wild. It’s not the African savanna, but it is a genuine safari area. It’s very easy to combine with the tropical beaches of Rio de Janeiro and the endless coastline of Brazil.

Far to the south, Patagonia is a wonderfully wild and untamed land, with epic scenery, glaciers, hiking and horseback riding. Remarkably, this is the only location in the world where the local big cats, pumas, are usually approached on foot. Other key species include guanacos (big llamas), Andean condors and various types of penguin, making this a genuine safari location too.

The Amazon Basin dominates the northeast half of South America. You might think that the best place to experience the forests would be Brazil, but there are good reasons to head upstream into Peru or Ecuador. Wildlife viewing is always difficult in forested areas, so this is more of a wrap-around jungle experience.

You may not realise that Peru is the Egypt of South America. The Inca people (of Machu Picchu fame) are relatively recent inhabitants, dating back only five or so centuries. Down on the desert coastline, the landscape is pocked with the remains of multiple civilisations that existed thousands of years ago. But it is the Inca Highlands that feature most frequently in trips, often in combination with the nearby parts of the Amazon Basin.

Finally, we come to the islands that lie far offshore in the Pacific Ocean, the mysterious Easter Island (Chile) and the entrancing Galapagos Islands (Ecuador).

Even if you are not the kind of people that like to return to the same places, there are at least three diverse trips that you could undertake in South America, each dramatically different from the last.

And that’s before we even start to think about Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay etc.

an incredibly diverse range of trips and experiences

There are so many different types of safari.

Classic savanna safaris classically involve driving around the bush looking at lions and elephants.

Trips to these areas can be tuned to focus on specific activities, like walking safari, motorboat safari and canoe safari. Or trips can also be tuned to focus on specific animals, like wild-dogs and elephants.

But safaris need not be limited to the savanna plains, they can explore tropical forests, mountain ranges and deserts.
They need not be limited to Africa. We operate safaris to South America, Asia and even Antarctica.

And safaris need not be limited to focusing on land mammals. They can concentrate on marine life, or cultural explorations, or even historical explorations.
