contains a remarkable diversity of epic locations

the greatest safari region in Africa

We divide Tanzania into around thirty key locations in five major regions. A few you will have heard of, several others are definitely worth researching, most are too niche to be including in trips with regularity.

Tanzania North

Arguably the greatest safari area in Africa, Tanzania North is a region of enormous diversity and quality, centred on the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Manyara and Tarangire areas, with guest accommodation in around 180 decent camps and lodges and offering an extremely wide range of safari, cultural and active experiences.

We divide the Tanzania North region into a total of eight sub-areas, each of which has their own very different character, reasons to visit and seasonality. Most visitors combine multiple areas into their safari.

Tanzania Northeast

The Tanzania Northeast region is dominated by Mount Kilimanjaro, with its fabulous trekking routes. It also includes some interesting and little-visited areas including savanna safari in West Kilimanjaro and Mkomazi, plus the highly endemic forests of the Usambara Mountains.

Here are the five most interesting areas of this Tanzania Northeast region.

Tanzania South

The Tanzania South region contains two superb wildlife reserves, Selous and Ruaha, with guest accommodation in around 25 quality camps and lodges, which are usually accessed by air from Dar es Salaam and combined with the tropical beaches of the coast. Other more peripheral areas include Mikumi, Udzungwa Mountains, Iringa and Mufindi Highlands.

We divide the Tanzania South region into a total of seven sub-areas. Of these, only Selous and Ruaha attract a significant number of visitors. The other five areas range from marginal to virtually off the map.

Tanzania West

The Tanzania West region contains two of the most remote and fabulous safari areas in Africa, namely the savanna reserve of Katavi and the remarkable chimpanzee experience at Mahale Mountains. Guest accommodation is in just a handful of high quality camps, accessed by expensive shared charter flights. Other more peripheral areas include Kigoma and Gombe Stream.

We divide the Tanzania West region into a total of four sub-areas. Of these, only Katavi and Mahale attract a significant number of visitors. The other two areas range from marginal to virtually off the map.

Tanzania Coast

Tanzania contains over 700 km of fabulous tropical coastline, plus the beautiful islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia, with guest accommodation in around 120 quality lodges, offering a very strong range of marine and cultural experiences. White sand beaches, great diving and incredible Swahili history.

We divide the Tanzania Coast into ten areas, which are listed below in order of decreasing popularity.

Tanzania North

Serengeti is the mother of all safari reserves, a most extraordinary place, best known for its enormous wildebeest and zebra migration, but with prolific wildlife year round. Guest accommodation is in a fabulous range of around 100 camps and lodges, offering a range of safari and cultural activities.

the mother of all safari reserves

Situated immediately to the south of Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Highlands is a range of dramatic volcanic peaks which is traversed during a safari, notably passing through the famous Ngorongoro Crater.

fabulously scenic volcanic highlands

Located 200 km southeast of Serengeti, Tarangire is a solid safari area renowned for great baobab trees and prodigious herds of elephants. Guest accommodation is in around 20 camps and lodges, offering a good range of safari activities, notably including walking safari and night vehicle safari.

enormous herds of elephants

Located 100km south of Serengeti, Lake Eyasi is a relatively little-visited area renowned for fascinating cultural interactions with the local Hadzabe hunter-gatherer people, with guest accommodation in a couple of decent lodges.

interaction with hunter-gatherers

Located 100 km east of Serengeti, Lake Natron is a surprisingly remote and magical area of stupendous Rift Valley scenery, with a good range of cultural, palaeontological and active experiences, notably the epic hike up the active volcano Oldonyo Lengai. Guest accommodation is in just a handful of simple camps. Accessed via a fabulous trek or a very long and bumpy drive.

remote area of fabulous volcanic scenery

Located 150 km southeast of Serengeti, Lake Manyara is a pretty little national park, but rather busy with vehicles and encroached upon by human settlement, with guest accommodation in a wide range of properties, offering a good range of safari, cultural and active experiences.

pretty but busy little safari reserve

Located 100 km southwest of Tarangire in Tanzania North, Kondoa is a largely peripheral area which is occasionally included in trips for its impressive rock-art. However there is no local guest accommodation, so the area is most commonly visited from a base in Tarangire.

little-visited rock-art sites

Located in Tanzania North, Arusha is a significant and relatively pleasant town, the start point for safaris into the Serengeti region, with guest accommodation in a good range of largely rural lodges. Overnight stops are frequently needed here in order to make flight connections.

the main hub for safari in the north

Tanzania Northeast

Located in Tanzania Northeast, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, the highest walkable mountain in the world and one of the ultimate outdoor challenges. We are one of the leading providers of high quality treks, with five to eight night options, exceptional summit success rates and an exemplary safety record.

the highest walkable mountain in the world

Located immediately north of the town of Arusha, this small national park contains a limited range of wildlife, but some really diverse and attractive scenery, plus activities including hiking, canoeing, mountain biking and the very serious three night trek to the summit of Mount Meru.

mountain reserve with good hiking trails

Lying between the eponymous mountain and the well known Amboseli reserve, West Kilimanjaro is a quiet safari area with fabulous views, a small selection of camps, offering an unusually wide range of rather cool activities.

safari area with unusual activities

Located immediately 200 km southeast of Mount Kilimanjaro, Usambara Mountains is a substantial range of great conservation value, with very high levels of endemism, but is of only marginal interest to the majority of safari travellers and has very little in the way of quality accommodation.

ancient mountain forests with high biodiversity

Located immediately 135 km southeast of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mkomazi is a very substantial national park which contains some important conservation projects, but which does not usually offer much in the way of wildlife viewing, so attracts very few visitors.

large safari reserve of little interest

Tanzania South

Set 500 km inland from Dar es Salaam in the south of Tanzania, Ruaha is the second largest wildlife reserve in the country, an intense and hypnotic place to go on safari. It’s wonderfully remote, receives only around 5% of the visitor traffic into Serengeti and contains just a handful of small and very high quality camps, offering top quality safari guiding. Walking safari is particularly strong.

one of the very best savanna safari reserves

Set 200 km inland from Dar es Salaam in the south of Tanzania, Selous is the only major wildlife reserve on the humid coastal plateau and has a uniquely languid and tropical feel, with a good range of wildlife, notably including wild-dogs. A particular highlight is the superb motorboat safari out on the Great Rufiji River. Guest accommodation is in a handful of high quality camps deep inside the reserve.

unusually languid savanna safari reserve

Set 275 km inland from Dar es Salaam in the south of Tanzania, Mikumi is the fourth largest reserve in the country and an important conservation area, but which is unfortunately of marginal interest to most people and is rarely included in quality safari trips.

large but less attractive savanna reserve

Mufindi is an upland area which was once home to extensive high altitude forests, but which is now dominated by attractive tea plantations and small scale agriculture. There is one decent quality lodge which occasionally features in trips as an easy place to rest up before a safari in nearby Ruaha.

beautiful tea plantations

Set 325 km inland from Dar es Salaam in the south of Tanzania, Udzungwa Mountains is a substantial forest reserve and a renowned island of endemism, of huge interest to naturalists, but tending to only be of niche appeal to most travellers.

high biodiversity tropical forests

Set on the TanZam highway some 500 km west of Dar es Salaam, Iringa is a pleasant rural town with some interesting local sites, but which only tends to feature in rare trips which overland between Mufindi, Ruaha and Mikumi.

pleasant market town near Ruaha

Set to the west of Selous, the Kilombero Valley is a vast area centred on a large wetland called the Kibasira Swamp, which we hope will one day open up for tourism in order that much needed conservation work can get underway.

extreme cultural immersion

Tanzania West

Set in the far west of Tanzania, Katavi is an extremely remote safari area. Essentially a seasonal floodplain, the central sweetspot at the heart of the reserve boasts the highest biodensity of any reserve in Africa during the Jun-Oct dry season. Unusual highlights include epic hippo and crocodile action. Guest accommodation is in less than a handful of good quality camps.

superb savanna safari in the remote west

Set in the far west of Tanzania, Mahale Mountains is not only an incredibly scenic location on the distant shores of Lake Tanganyika, but it also happens to be the best location in Africa for chimpanzee tracking. In fact this is almost certainly the ultimate primate experience, even better than gorilla tracking. Guest accommodation is in just a couple of very remote camps.

the best chimpanzee location in Africa

Set in the extreme west of Tanzania, Gombe Stream is a small reserve on Lake Tanganyika where the primary activity is chimpanzee trekking, but which is very much a second best option compared with the nearby Mahale Mountains area.

a lesser chimpanzee location

Set in the extreme west of Tanzania, Kigoma is the main railway terminus and port on Lake Tanganyika. It’s a pleasant town of great historical interest, being close to Ujiji, the furthest point of the infamous slave route from Zanzibar and the famous meeting place of explorers Stanley and Livingstone. But it’s way off the beaten track and understandably attracts very few safari travellers.

remote city in the far west

Tanzania Coast

Set off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar Island is a fabulously beautiful and extremely historic place with glorious white sand beaches, coral lagoons and excellent diving. Guest accommodation is in around 120 decent lodges, hotels and resorts, offering a wide range of marine and cultural activities.

by far the most popular beach option

Set just north of Zanzibar, Pemba Island is a relatively remote and extremely beautiful place, with guest accommodation in just a handful of good quality lodges, offering a very strong range of marine and cultural experiences. Superb diving.

surprisingly remote alternative to Zanzibar

Set off the southern coast of Tanzania, Mafia Island is a little-visited place best known for its great diving, swimming with whale sharks, authentic Swahili culture and characterful lodges.

rather cool and little-visited island

Set on the northern coast of Tanzania, the Pangani and Tanga area represents an interesting lower cost alternative to Zanzibar, with guest accommodation in a dozen largely simple lodges, offering a good range of marine and cultural activities.

beach option on the north coast

Set on the mainland coast of Tanzania just south of Zanzibar Island, Dar es Salaam is the economic capital and a major transport hub for the country, where safari travellers are often obliged to overnight in order to make flight connections.

transit night to make flight connections

Set on the mainland coast just south of Dar es Salaam, Ras Kutani is a peaceful and beautiful beach area with just one high quality lodge. There is no no diving here, but the relaxation is second to none. Unfortunately, that lodge is presently closed.

a remote beach area south of Dar

Set on the mainland coast of Tanzania, 250 km south of Dar es Salaam, Kilwa is a little-visited area with some important historic ruins and one fabulously remote island lodge.

historic coastal ruined city

Set on the remote southern coast of Tanzania, Mikindani is an historic forgotten backwater with a very interesting and unusual hotel.

historic port in the deep south

Set on the mainland coast just north of Dar es Salaam, Saadani is arguably the only reserve in East Africa to be able to properly offer safari and beach in the same location, although neither are very strong.

the only genuine safari and beach location

Set on the mainland coast of Tanzania opposite Zanzibar Island, Bagamoyo is an historic old port which is of interest to a few safari travellers, with guest accommodation in just one decent beach lodge.

a little-visited but historic coastal backwater
