is the most remarkable savanna reserve in Africa

the centrepiece of an incredible region

The Serengeti is a very substantial national park, the undisputed highlight of the wonderful Northern Tanzania safari region and surely the greatest wildlife reserve in East Africa.

A common misconception is that the Serengeti is a vast endless grassy plain, when in reality it comprises a wide range of different scenery and ecosystems.

The area is best known for its massive wildebeest migration, which is a rolling year-round spectacle. In addition it’s the most productive area in Africa for lions and cheetahs.

The Serengeti is well worth visiting at any time of year, usually staying in two or three different sub-areas over 4 to 7 nights, usually as part of a longer overland safari through the region.

The area has a superb range of accommodation options, a refreshingly high proportion of which are unusually small and authentic mobile tented camps.

The Serengeti is one of the most seasonal reserves in Africa, but it remains a great place to visit every single month of the year.

The two most popular periods are the Jul-Oct dry season, when the herds are in the north with river crossings and the Dec-Mar green season, when the herds are on the southern plains and in having their young.

Getting around

The majority of visitors to the Serengeti area arrive by guided overland safari, so they travel between camps and around the reserve in their private vehicle.

Around 25% of visitors to Serengeti arrive by light aircraft, flying into one of several bush airstrips. In this case they either start a guided overland safari as above or travel around the reserve with a vehicle and guide from their camp.

We always include all connecting transport in your trip unless you specifically ask us not to.

Where to stay

Trying to decide where to stay in Serengeti is rather complicated.

Selecting camps and lodges based purely on how they look or the facilities they offer is definitely not recommended. You really should consider the three main seasonal issues of weather, wildlife movements and visitor traffic.

The link below will take you to a page where we present all of the lodges and camps in all eight Serengeti areas combined. If you change the month in the search sentence then the lodge ratings will reorder appropriately to show you the very best options for that period. That’s a good place to start.
