Upington
is a significant town
in the north of South Africa
an oasis of green in the vast semi-desert
Upington is a regionally important town set alongside the Orange River on the N14 highway, 750 km west of Johannesburg and 400 km east of Springbok in the northwest of South Africa.
The town is very much the gateway to the Kalahari. It is surrounded by a vast and arid wilderness, with routes heading north to the Kgalagadi and Southern Namibia, south into the Great Karoo.
The town is surrounded by heavily irrigated agricultural land, mainly vineyards, although the lush greenery does little to alleviate the searing summer temperatures.
Map
Although pleasant enough, Upington is generally only used as an overnight stop for the few guests travelling this route.
Since we do not generally recommend self-drive routes that combine South Africa and Namibia (since there is way too much bland main road mileage), we very rarely have the need to include Upington.
