Travel to Graaff-Reinet
Graaff-Reinet
is an historic town,
with nature reserves and fossils
the area is a delight to explore
The small town of Graaff-Reinet is located around 250 km inland from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa.
Set within a circular river meander and flanked by high granite mountains, this historic town is really rather attractive and retains a good deal of impressive Victorian architecture.
Not far from town lie two rather interesting wildlife reserves, which are notable because they have not gone the touristy route of artificially creating a ‘Big Five’ safari experience, but have instead concentrated on restoring the wildlife that would have naturally occurred in the area in centuries gone by.
To the north of town there are some truly superb fossil beds, the source of many remarkable dinosaur remains. There’s even a couple of lodges which specialise in this unusual activity.
