Pietermaritzburg is the capital of the KwaZulu Natal region of South Africa.
Although founded by the Boers in 1839, it’s the British architecture from later that century which is most evident in the modern city today.
This vibrant university town has a relatively affluent and cosmopolitan atmosphere. The main points of interest to the visitor are the various museums and galleries, as well as some pleasant shopping in The Lanes.
The town has a large Indian population, Mahatma Gandhi being its most famous son.
