Wellington
is a less attractive town
in the Cape Winelands

blighted by insensitive modern development
Wellington is located in the Cape Winelands area of South Africa.
The town of Wellington used to be a very pleasant and historic rural settlement, surrounded by some of the finest vineyards in the region.
These days however, the area to the south of town in particular has been blighted by massive urban development. Whilst we do understand the need to provide housing for local people, but the way it has been done here has all but completely destroyed the character and appeal of the area. The road north from Paarl to Wellington the main road is lined virtually continuously by 12 km of modern townships.

Beyond this development, especially to the east, there remain some decent, relatively interesting places to stay, although most are having increasing difficulty in maintaining their status as truly rural retreats.
We now no longer recommend any of the properties in this area, in preference to the much better preserved village of Franschhoek to the south.
