The best ways to avoid traffic in Serengeti

there are always quiet parts of the reserve

Anyone who tells you that the Serengeti is “too busy” or “overdone” is simply admitting that they don’t know how to go about arranging a proper safari.

In truth almost all of the vehicle clustering takes place in predictable core areas and is very easily avoided. It’s estimated that at any time 95% of visitors to the Serengeti area are in only 10% of the land.

Although there is an undeniable tendency for the highest visitor numbers to coincide with the highest animal densities, if you prefer to avoid the crowds then there are vast areas into which you can disappear.

We have spent days in the Serengeti, even in peak season, where we’ve barely seen a soul. You can spend a whole week in prime parts of the reserve without seeing evidence of another human being, if you are so inclined and plan accordingly.

Clearly the best option for people who want to have the place to themselves is to visit during the low seasons. These notably include mid-March to mid-May (the main rainy season), start-November to mid-December (short rainy season) and the last two weeks in January (something of a secret season).

Another great idea is to head to the opposite end of the reserve from the migration, since that acts as a magnet for visitors. The real stand-out option is the Serengeti Mara area during the Dec-May green season, when the migration is far off in the south and this becomes a wonderful backwater with strong resident wildlife.
