Gorongosa National Park is one of the most inspiring conservation stories in Africa, a vast and varied landscape of floodplains, woodlands, and forested highlands that lies at the southern end of the Great African Rift Valley in central Mozambique.

The park’s ecological richness stems from the way its habitats meet, the vast Lake Urema and its surrounding floodplain sit below the slopes of Mount Gorongosa, collecting seasonal waters that sustain large populations of wildlife through the dry months. The park is now the centre of one of Africa’s most ambitious restoration programmes, with ecosystems recovering rapidly and wildlife numbers increasing year by year.

Safari in Gorongosa takes place across a large, little-visited landscape, with few other vehicles and a strong sense of exploring a genuine wilderness. Although the density of predators and variety of animals is not yet on the scale of some other prime areas, the sightings often feel personal and unhurried.

The main activities include daytime and night vehicle safari, walking safari, and visits to conservation and community projects that provide deeper insight into how Gorongosa’s recovery is being managed. Birdwatching is excellent throughout the year, and seasonal boating is usually available in April & May when the flooded plains are still covering a large amount of the vehicle safari areas.

The development of these new camps has really opened up this area to experienced visitors.

Flying from Johannesburg to the coastal city of Beira, it is then a 30 minute hopper flight to Gorongosa.

After your safari, it’s easy to connect down to the coastal area of Vilanculos and the multitude of lodges in and around the Bazaruto archipelago.
