Safari to Gorongosa
Gorongosa
is a major rehabilitation project
in central Mozambique
on the road to recovery, after the devastation of the revolution
Set 100 km north of Beira, Gorongosa is one of the better safari reserves in Mozambique.
In common with most of the wildlife areas, this place was devastated during the revolution, with chronic poaching and people moving into the bush to try to escape the conflict.
A major rehabilitation project is well underway, but it will be some years before this becomes a safari area of wider appeal.
For now, visitors tend to be either very experienced safari travellers in search of a new location, or people who are genuinely interested to witness the conservation program in action.

The main negative for Gorongosa is that it is quite difficult to fit into trips.
Flying from Johannesburg to the coastal city of Beira, it is a 3-4 hour drive inland to Gorongosa.
From there, it is a 6-7 hour drive south to the beach lodges of the Bazaruto area.
All this can be done, but it is quite a lot of effort and cost in order to access what is, ultimately, something of a second rate wildlife area.
