intimate interaction with brown bears

Remotely located on the flats of Chinitna Bay in Lake Clark National Park, Northwild Brown Bear Bay is an unusually authentic and exciting location.

The lodge is under the same wildlife-specialist ownership as properties that we use for jaguars in Brazil and pumas in Patagonia (which go under the name SouthWild and can be found using the search tool top right).

Guest accommodation in just two cabins, which not only ensures that the lodge is an intimate place to stay, but also allows the bears to feel confident to wander between the few simple buildings, often providing incredible and immediate interactions. You may not even need to leave your veranda to get great photos.

The bear action here reaches its peak during the May-Jul early summer season, when the salmon return up the rivers to their spawning grounds. The bears spend much of their days in the shallows in front of the lodge, catching and gorging themselves on these delicious fish.

It is important to book at least a year ahead for salmon season, two years if you can.

Access is via flights to Anchorage, followed by a connecting light aircraft flight across the inlet to land at the dirt airstrip close to camp. The usual stay duration is 3-7 nights, making for a nice compact trip for guests from the USA.
