chimpanzees and forest elephants

Rubondo Island Camp is located in the Lake Victoria area of northern Tanzania.

This property is owned and operated by Asilia Africa, one of the leading safari companies in East Africa, the owners of which are committed to both an earthy, authentic, high quality approach to safari and a very strong conservation ethos.

Situated on the eastern shore of the island, the camp is a high quality affair, with lovely open-plan lounge and dining areas and a decent swimming pool above a pleasant sandy bay.

Rooms

Guest accommodation at Rubondo Island Camp is in eight cottages under tin roofs, with views out to the beach, where black kites, monitor lizards and otters can be seen.

There is also a treehouse sleep-out option overlooking the lake.

Activities

Rubondo Island Camp provides the following guided activities, most of which are included in the room rate …

  • Chimpanzee tracking
  • Forest walks
  • Hiking
  • Motorboat safari
  • Cultural interaction

Rubondo Island features in an incredibly low proportion of trips. Guests who want beaches tend to head to the Indian Ocean, whilst guests who want chimps tend to head to Mahale or Kibale. But the fact that so few people visit is a major part of the allure, this is a very special place, one that tends to particularly delight experienced safari travellers.

The usual stay duration is 4-7 nights.

Getting there

The property is accessed by scheduled air services into Rubondo Airstrip, which is served by the regular Arusha, Manyara, Serengeti, Mwanza, Rubondo, Kigali service.

For this reason the lodge is commonly used as a beach and chimp break between savanna safari in Serengeti and gorilla tracking in Rwanda.

From the airstrip it is a short drive of around 10 minutes to the lodge.
