extraordinary elephant interaction

Ithumba Camp is located in the Tsavo East area of southeast Kenya.

This property is owned by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, who are the operators of the famous baby elephant orphanage in Nairobi.

This is the location to which the young elephants, after they have been hand reared, are transported and are gently encouraged to join the wild herds that frequent the local waterhole.

It represents one of the most fabulous and uncommercial wildlife experiences in Africa, a superb option for passionate elephant lovers and experienced safari travellers.

The camp is usually reserved for major donors and sponsors of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and is only occasionally available for outside booking.

It can only be booked by a single private group of up to eight guests.

Rooms

Guest accommodation at Ithumba Camp is in just four tented rooms, each with a private outdoor bathroom.

Activities

Ithumba Camp is focused exclusively only on the nearby elephant project, with often intense interaction with the youngsters who are in the final stages of their return to the wild.

Tsavo East is a relatively  little-visited reserve, but we tend to include it in a good number of trips, since we rate the elephant interaction so very highly.

The usual stay duration is 3-5 nights.

Getting there

The Tsavo East area is usually accessed by road from Nairobi, a journey of 3-5 hours.
