Lusaka
is the capital and
transport hub of Zambia

most travellers pass through the international airport
Lusaka is the largest and capital city of Zambia, located in the country’s central region and offering transport links to the key safari areas.
This city would not usually be included in your safari unless this is a necessary overnight stop for onward travel connections.
Lusaka only became the capital of Zambia in 1964, when the country declared its independence from the British Empire.
It therefore contains very few historic buildings and lacks the grandeur of most capital cities. The only aspect of the city which is of significant interest to some travellers are the large open markets.
However, like all African cities, there is always a vast range of colourful street life on view, for the purist traveller to enjoy.

The main airport at Lusaka is relatively poorly connected for a capital city.
There are good flight connections within southern Africa, but long haul flights are in short supply. Most long haul travellers arrive via Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa or Dubai.
The city is well connected by light aircraft to key locations within Zambia, including Livingstone (Victoria Falls) and the safari areas of South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Kafue.
