Pilanesberg is located in the north of South Africa.

This impressive 30 km diameter range of free-standing volcanic hills was gazetted as a national park and stocked with wildlife in 1979.

The reserve is encircled by an outer ring of settlement and an inner ring of large resorts, which combine to make it rather less attractive than it might otherwise be to the international visitor.

Also, being so close to Johannesburg and Pretoria means that this area is very much a weekend escape for city residents.

At 425 square kilometres, Pilansberg is a substantial reserve, a range of free-standing volcanic hills which stands proud of the surrounding plains.
The reserve was established as a national park in 1979, at which time it was restocked with wildlife.
Being so close to Johannesburg and Pretoria means that this area is very much a weekend escape for city residents.
The reserve is encircled by an outer ring of settlement and an inner ring of large resorts, which combine to make it less attractive to the international safari traveller.
There is one nice lodge set high in the mountains, namely Tshukudu Bush Lodge.
But the main attraction is the inimitable Sun City, with its golfing, gambling and other attractions.
The top option is the rather incredible Palace of the Lost City.

The Pilanesberg area is very well known for the Sun City complex of casino hotels, golf courses and other sporting facilities, the best of which is the incredible Palace of the Lost City.

There is one decent safari option, Tshukudu Bush Lodge, set high on the Pilansberg itself.
