Greyton is located in the Overberg area of the Western Cape.

This rural settlement sits at the foot of the Riviersonderend Mountains, around 15 km north of the main N2 coastal highway.

It’s a pretty and pleasantly sleepy village, whose streets are lined with shady oak trees and traditional houses.

The area has a very pleasant climate and lovely scenery laced by various rivers and streams.

Perhaps the town’s greatest plus point is that there’s really not that much to attract international visitors, leaving the place free for the residents of Cape Town to use as a weekend retreat and retirement location.

The village marks the start of the well known Boesmankloof hiking trail, which leads 16km up the mountain pass to the very attractive village of McGregor. In Victorian times this trail was the main wagon route north up to the Overberg region, the two villages at either end being left high and dry when the main road was driven along a completely different route.

We very rarely end up including Greyton in trips since people driving the N2 coastal highway tend to stay at De Hoop, whilst those driving the R62 inland route tend to skip from Franschhoek to Montagu and Calitzdorp (in the Little Karoo), perhaps stopping for lunch in McGregor, at the upper end of the pass.
