a dramatic coastline on the Garden Route

bungee jumping, kayaking and hiking

Storms River is located at the western end of the Garden Route, some 530 km east of Cape Town.

Unlike the serene and relaxed beach atmosphere of the nearby Nature’s Valley, Storms River Mouth is a much harsher place, where river and surf do battle in the confines of a precipitous gorge, surrounded by steep forested hillsides.

The main reason to stop in this area is to undertake one of the multiple day coastal hikes that are operated in either direction from the mouth.

It’s also possible to do a rather cool day trip which crosses the bay by kayak before heading under the suspension bridge and up the narrow and extremely atmospheric defile of the Storm’s River itself, transferring onto lilos for the last shallow stretches.

The Garden Route is considerably less seasonal than most other parts of Africa.
Most notably it experiences a good deal more consistent levels of cloud and rain year round, in contrast to the Cape which has a much more pronounced dry summer Nov-Mar.

The climate is still very pleasant, but you can expect a little bit more weather out here. For this you are compensated by the wonderful verdant landscapes and rich forests for which the area is named.

Summer : Nov-Apr

This period is generally considered to be the preferred time to visit, with pleasantly warm temperatures, longer days and marginally higher average sunshine hours.

Winter : May/Oct

This period is notionally winter, but temperatures are only a few degrees below their summer levels, average sunshine hours about the same and rainfall just as unpredictable. But the days are definitely shorter.

Where to stay

Although there is some accommodation in the settlement of Storms River to the north, ultimately there are much more attractive options in the adjacent Nature’s Valley area.
