Bloemfontein
is the historic capital
of the Boer people

areas of pleasant colonial architecture
Bloemfontein is located in the centre of South Africa, approximately 400 km southwest of Johannesburg and 1000 km northeast of Cape Town.
After being granted independence from Britain in 1854, the Orange Free State became the centre for Boer nationalism, with the town of Bloemfontein as its capital.
These days the city remains capital of the renamed Free State. At its centre lies an area of substantial colonial buildings, whilst its suburbs now extend out across the plains in all directions.
